Konica Minolta Cup round up 2 October 2006, 9:28 am
Bryncethin coach Paul Watkins hopes his side's cup heroics will pave the way to league status following their shock 22-15 victory over Penarth... The 106-year-old Bridgend club have recently developed their knock-out pedigree after being crowned Welsh District Cup champions and reaching the third round of the Konica Minolta Cup in their first attempt last year. Now they have equalled that feat after securing their place in today's third round draw following a hard-fought victory at once-proud Penarth. Mike Richards, Jamie Davies and Andrew Bayliss scored the crucial tries for the non-league giant-killers. Coach Paul Watkins said: "We knew it was going to be hard and it was a very tough game but the players really dug deep and got the result they deserved. I think the boys are learning what it takes to win these big games. Our main aim is to win league status. We've shown we can compete with teams at a higher level. It's a great advert for the club." Bryncethin will be joined by fellow Districts outfits Cambrian Welfare and Abertysswg also kept their cup dreams alive by battling through the next round. Tonypandy club Cambrian Welfare from the Rhondda and East Glamorgan District overcame Division Five's Glyncorrwg 29-12 in only their second season in the senior cup thanks to tries from David Owen and Jonathan Davies and the prolific boot of outside-half Julian Huntley. Club secretary Steve Thomas said: "This was a massive win for the club and we're just going to enjoy every game we get from now on. We've got some great young backs who could give anyone a go in the next round." Gwent club Abertysswg booked their place in the third round in style with a convincing 34-18 win over struggling Cowbridge. Nathan Pullin scored two tries while prop Jonathan Osbourne, scrum-half Jamie Parry and full-back Brent Jones all followed in the rout. Backs coach Brian Smith said: "It was a fantastic performance from the boys. We know we're not going to win the cup but it's a great sideline to the league and we'd love to make a name for ourselves by taking a few big scalps." Dinbych, Caenarfon, Pwllheli and Llangefni, who survived a late fightback by Aberdare, are all flying the flag for north Wales in the third round of the cup following their successes.

Hi Milan,
Sorry I have not been in touch since we returned but I have been in South Wales. First of all, thank you so much for making our trip so memorable. The guys loved your country, your beer and most of all your people. Czech tourism will have had a boost. But they also know that something special happened in those ten days and that Rugby League was established and with your help will flourish - congratulations.
All the Best

On reflection - our trip to Prague I feel was well organised and the accommodation and itinerary were fine.Apart from the first fixture the opposition was of the right level and was > just what we wanted, so we would seriously look at bringing a team out > again in the future.
Best Regards
Jim and Jo

STUDENT RUGBY LEAGUEBy Gerard Keenan |

"STUDENT PIONEERS TAKE CZECH LESSONS"
To many people, Prague means stag weekends, cheap beer and fuzzy memories. However 25 members of the GB SRL Chairman’s XIII returned from a ten day groundbreaking tour in July to the Czech Republic with a massive impression of a nation ripe and ready for the explosion of rugby league. The aim of the squad, known as ‘The Pioneers’, is to aid the development of the greatest game in fledgling rugby league nations. The GB Players and management enthused about the prospects for rugby league. Team Captain Steve Owen commented, “The players of the Czech Republic have the core skills and physical attributes to make a success of rugby league. More importantly they have a strong culture of team sports and the right attitude to learn how the game is played.”
The Czech Republic has a rugby tradition dating back eighty years but this is the first time rugby league has been played. Over consecutive weekends, the Pioneers played two ‘tests’ winning 29 – 8 in Prague and 34 – 22 in Olomouc, the regional capital of Monrovia which lies about 200 miles east of Prague. Although the Pioneers won the games convincingly, the Czech’s came back strongly in the latter end of both matches demonstrating their ability to learn and improve. These were no walkover exhibitions with the Czech Republic containing four rugby union internationals who between them total over 100 caps. In the first match, scrum half Owen and prop Gareth Barron were outstanding for the Pioneers while in the second game hooker Craig Barker and second row Luke Scrimshaw were the players who caught the eye.
The tour was organised in liaison with Milan Mrtynek, the ideal person to ensure that the development of the sport is successful. Mrtynek, a local to Prague, is a former full international in rugby union and as such is highly respected by players and administrators alike. Moreover, he is fluent in English with a wife who comes from Scarborough, Yorkshire. Not only can he perform on the park but he has that organiser’s magic touch to ensure that Czech rugby league will also deliver off the field.
The 24 person Pioneers squad is unique in that it has equal representation of both players and management from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales which together make up the SRL Four Nations. In 2005 the squad had a highly successful tour to Estonia playing the first ever rugby league matches in that country. Team Manager Gerard Keenan said, “We hope to offer something to people who are keen to learn our fabulous game. However we depart the Czech Republic with wonderful memories of people and a culture which many of us might otherwise never witness.”
Before the second test in Olomouc, the squad felt highly honoured to be presented to Mr Milos Dobry, the founder of the local rugby club and the last survivor in Olomouc of the Auschwitz death camp during the Second World War. “A tour like this helps young people to develop in so many ways,” said Keenan.
